When I moved in there was one large, make-shift shelf in the rafter of the garage. Although nothing ever fell the fear was always there. So I set about designing a more "concealed" shelf with integrated lighting to replace the ones that hung too low. These pictures are of what it originally looked like (old lights and all). The new design will have the lights nearly flush with the rafters so that the hood of the car won't hit them anymore.

I bought all the wood that I needed at once and cut it all to size in one day. But since I had to wait on the lights I'd only install the shelving and not the bottom. The hardest part was re-running a lot of the wiring that winds through the rafters. The wood actually went in pretty easy in comparison and my original measurements were spot on (for once). The installation did get spread over the course of months though (because of weather and time constrants with two jobs).

Here's the front shelf that's done (and loaded up already). I haven't put the bottom part in because I don't have the lights yet but you get the general idea. I may also put a couple pieces of wood on the sides to prevent anything from accidently falling off but it may not be needed.
